This document provides an overview of referrals. If you do not need an overview, skip this page and proceed with adding a referral.
What is a Referral?
Referrals are logged on the Referral tab of the Student Profile.
When an individual expresses a concern about a student, the school may log the concern as a Referral record in eCSSS. This is the starting point for all formal plans in the Student Support Process (i.e., 504 Plan or Individualized Education Program). A referral contains:
Information about the person making the request.
Date the DOE receives the referral.
Description of concerns.
An indication that the student is suspected of a disability and date marking the end of the 15-day timeline.
Referrals employ Expandable View to present information and functions. When a document is highlighted in the referral, the Actions menu items change accordingly (see list).
View All Referrals / View Current Referrals
The default view displays referrals that are up to two years old.
When you select View All Referrals, all referrals in the student's history are displayed, as shown below.
Select View Current Referrals to see referrals that are up to two years old and / or have an active plan on file.
Finding a Plan on the Referral Tab
On the Referral tab, some referral rows may contain 504 Plan, IEP or AP (no longer used by DOE, but records are view-only).
If a referral row contains 504 Plan or IEP, please note what it means:
Active Plans - The referral contains the active plan for the indicated plan type (e.g., if IEP, the referral contains the currently active IEP).
Draft Plans - The referral contains the latest editable draft for the indicated plan type. Old drafts that are no longer editable will not be marked.
Inactive Plans - Plans that were once activated but are no longer active and cannot be edited.
See instructions for logging a referral.
