This document provides an overview of Specific Learning Disabilities. If you do not need an overview, skip this page and proceed with finding the SLD Worksheet and entering information on its tabs.
Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD) must be accurately identified in order to prevent "labeling" of students as learning disabled. SLD eligibility is determined by an Eligibility Team, comprised of the child's parents and a team of qualified professionals, including the general education teacher and one person qualified to conduct individual diagnostic examinations of children.
Important Background: SLD and Eligibility Determination
In eCSSS, SLD eligibility findings are recorded in the SLD Worksheet, which is part of the Eligibility Determination record.
Being part of Eligibility Determination, the SLD Worksheet is subject to several prerequisites that must be met before the full Eligibility Determination record can be saved with a Filed Date. The Filed Date is on the Key Dates tab of the Eligibility Determination screen. The Filed Date is a critical date within the IEP process.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Please note the following about Eligibility Determination:
Enter an Eligibility Decision Date – On the Key Dates tab, an Eligibility Decision Date is required.
Use Caution with Filed Date – On the Key Dates tab, do not enter a Filed Date until you are sure the Eligibility Determination document is complete and all SLD Form prerequisites are met.
Save the Eligibility Determination – The SLD Worksheet is saved only if the Eligibility Determination is saved.
*NOTE: This applies only if the Student Team names SLD as the Eligibility Category in the Eligibility Worksheet.
